SEED ARRIVES
What does a Snyder do when the equipment is ready and they are waiting for the land to be fit to start working ground?
We do seed germ tests!!
To ensure that we are prepared for success, we do seed germ tests. This helps to make sure that we have realistic expectations of how many viable plants we can expect to grow from the seeds planted. While there are many variables that can impact growth in the field, these tests help confirm the quality of seed we are working with as well as ensuring that we are giving our crop the best start possible!
After aligning the individual seeds in rows and columns, we cover with paper towels and then moisten daily. The seeds are then nestled under a warm blanket to create cozy dark growing conditions that mimic their life in the soil. Three days later we count the sprouted kernels and enter the data into a spreadsheet to give us our average germ.
What a great way to spend a cool Saturday in April!
